Yorkshire Water is investing £6 million in two projects intended to reduce sewage discharges and improve water quality in the River Don at Rotherham.
A £4.75 million scheme at Clifton Park will include a new underground tank capable of storing 345,000 litres of excess wastewater during heavy rain.
Yorkshire Water expects the work to reduce storm-overflow discharges at the site by around 72 per cent, cutting the annual average from 37 releases to fewer than ten.
A further £1.25 million will be spent at Herringthorpe Playing Fields separating surface water from the wastewater system, reducing pressure on sewers during heavy rainfall.
The Clifton Park project is expected to take around 18 months.
