Yorkshire Water says it is investing £6m in two Rotherham projects designed to improve water quality in the River Don.
A £4.75m scheme at Clifton Park will create a 345-cubic-metre underground storage tank capable of holding 345,000 litres of excess wastewater during heavy rainfall.
The company expects the work to reduce annual discharges from the Clifton Park combined sewer overflow by around 72%, from an average of 37 to fewer than ten a year.
A further £1.25m project at Herringthorpe Playing Fields will separate surface water from the wastewater network, reducing the volume of rainfall entering and potentially overloading sewers.
